Our Model A Club History

In 2004 there were many Model A Ford owners in the Melvin Village, New Hampshire area. Many of them were frequent guests at the Melvin Garage. Late in the year they banded together and formed the club.

The first meeting was held on October 10, 2004. The meeting started at 9:00 A.M. The officers elected were: Mark Smith, President; Paul Magrath, Vice President; Carol Magrath, Secretary; Ladd Eaton, Treasurer and John Warner, Newsletter Editor. Also present were David Ladd, Hal Forman, Jim Shepard, Heather Smith and David Wiley. These people are considered the charter members of the club.

The group choose the name New Hampshire Lakes Region Model A Club and decided that the meeting day would be the third Saturday of each month at 9:00 A.M.

In 2005 the club logo appeared and we still use the same logo today. Meetings were held each month as the club grew and became active. The same officers served for 2005 and 2006.

In 2006 the club continued to grow and at the National Meet of The Model A Ford Club of America in Mansfield, Mass. We were asked to help out by running the car games which we did a great job at.

The first Castle Show was held in July. The first show was rather small but this show grew in size over the next few years. The club used the profit from the Castle Shows to fund the New England Meet in 2009.

The officers for Elected in the fall of 2006 were Karen Wiley, President; Hal Forman, Vice President; Kendra Dussault, Secretary; Tony Lyon, Treasurer and Irene Ladd, Newsletter Editor.

During 2006 the club held many functions and tours and enjoyed more growth.

The officers for 2007 remained the same with one change, Heather Smith became the treasurer. The club had a Lady’s Drive a Model A Day. Several of the ladies learned to drive that day and not one disagreement was had with any couple. The club attended the New England Meet in Sturbridge, Mass. To have fun and learn for the meet we would run in 2009.

The officers remained the same for 2008. The club was well into the planning for the 2009 New England Meet. In June several members went to Manchester, Vt. for the Dorr Farm Show and we had a very enjoyable time. In July we met in Plymouth, N.H. with the Twin Mountain Chapter and The North Country Restorers Club and celebrated Henry Ford’s birthday. We also ran the Castle Car Show in July. Several members traveled to Lake George, N.Y. for the 2008 New England Meet.

The officers elected for 2009 were Jeff DeMoura, President; Mark Smith, Vice President; Terry Hussey, Secretary; Heather Smith, Treasurer and Irene Ladd, Newsletter Editor.

In 2009 most of the club activities were centered on getting ready for the 2009 New England Meet. The meet was held in September in Laconia, N.H. The meet was a big hit with the New England model A community. There were about 200 Model A’s and about 400 people at the meet.

In the late fall of 2009 Paul and Carol Magrath led the club on a frost bite tour around the Squam Lake area after a breakfast at the Village kitchen.

Again, the officers remained the same for 2010. Among other activities in the fall the club held a Manifold Cooking Tour. We toured around the big lake to the Hussey’s garage where more food awaited. Nobody went home hungry.

The officers elected for 2011 were David Wiley, President; Bob Woods, Vice President; Karen Wiley, Secretary; Mark Smith, Treasurer and Karen Wiley; Newsletter Editor.

New for 2011 was a Board of Directors, They were and still are Neil Hussey, Bart Carlson and David Ladd.

In January Bob Wood put on a demonstration about Fire extinguishers which was interesting and fun.

In May the Husseys took us to The Powder Mill Fish Hatchery which was also very interesting. In August we held the 5th N.H. Lakes Region Antique and Classic Car Show in Sandwich, N.H.

That is the history of our club through 2011 as I see it.
